Flexography – For Quick And Quality Printing

Flexographic Printing is extensively used in the publishing industry for the production of directories, newspaper inserts, catalogs, comics, etc... It has wide applications in the packaging industry also to produce various packaging materials, folding cartons and labels. Large quantities of inks are consumed by the Flexographic presses. The spent ink and wash waters are recycled by the presses though all types of presses are not capable of recycling. The solvents for cleaning the rollers and the solutions used for plate making are the other chemicals required for this type of printing. The plates are flexible.

They are made of either rubber or photopolymer. Double faced adhesive is used to mount the plates on the cylinder. The cylinder is provided with thin sheets of metals in order to ensure the quality of printing. The plates with metal sheets make a great difference in the quality. In this type of work, there will be four types of operations - preparing the image, making the plate and finishing. There are five different types of works that are used in this type - stack type, newspaper unit, central impression cylinder, in-line and dedicated 4, 5 or 6 color unit commercial presses.

The most important part in the entire process involved in the creation of various packaging materials like adhesive tapes, labels, plastic containers, corrugated containers, folding cartons, wrappers, envelopes, beverage cartons, disposable cups, paper sacks etc. is the Flexographic part. Fast, easy and cost-effective work of the packaging materials and various decorative items is made possible by the Flexographic Printing method. Since the operation of this type of presses is very simple and they are easily adaptable to water-based inks this type has become very popular now.

Emission of VOC is reduced to a great extent thanks to the use of water-based inks. In case of gravure and heatset web printing application of water-based inks enables reduction of VOC emission which is considered as a great advantage. Basically this is a rotary web letterpress type and is a blend of rotogravure and letterpress printing. The inks are fed from the two-roller inking system called 'anilox'. Low viscosity solvent is used to facilitate fast drying.

For each color of the ink separate plates and inking system is provided. The finishing of the substrate includes four types of operations - coating, cutting, folding and finding. The inks used for this type are similar to those used for gravure printing for packagings. The inks are fast drying and remain on the surface of non-absorbent substrates.
